Hi, I’m Melanie!
Welcome to Eatin’ the Dream! I’m so glad you came to visit!
I created this blog to invite you to join me on my journey as I begin to live my dreams and start exploring my passions of all things food and travel.
You may be wondering where the name “Eatin’ the Dream” came from. I guess you could say it derived from the past 3 1/2 years that I’ve spent sitting behind a desk, in the same chair from 8:30-5:30 Monday-Friday, staring at a computer screen, looking at resumes until I actually convinced myself I could do the job of an Android Developer with my Marketing degree and finding myself somehow getting on the topic of food and restaurants with every candidate I spoke with. I found an unusual amount of happiness in sharing with my colleagues my recently-stocked snack drawer. I would find myself always searching for a new recipe to try, raving to my friends, family and colleagues about a dish I had at a new restaurant, reading food blogs and rushing home from work to try a new kitchen creation. While my friends couldn’t stop talking about their day of snowboarding on the mountains, I couldn’t stop talking about the pancakes we had that morning at the cafe while we waited for the slopes to open.
You could also say it came from growing up with a family in the food business. My grandfather started Don’s Salads in 1970 and my father has since taken over his legacy. To my advantage, I can eat all the chicken salad and oreo mousse my heart desires! No, seriously. If you haven’t tried their oreo mousse then you’ve been missing out your entire life. If you want to see three college roommates fight over an empty container, just give them a tub of oreo mousse and watch. It’s THAT good!
The past year and a half have been a whirlwind for me. I moved from Philadelphia to Connecticut for a new job, away from all of my close family and friends, and three days later a bastard ran a light and totaled my car. However, I believe everything happens for a reason, and have learned and grown so much in just a short amount of time- all because of this experience. I’ve been able to find through all of this what I need in life to be happy. I’ve begun to live a healthier lifestyle, I challenge myself emotionally, mentally and physically, and most importantly, I love the strong, independent woman I have become.
I think it really hit me when I realized every time someone at work would ask me how I was doing, I would respond with “just livin’ the dream!” That’s how I knew I needed a change and I needed to focus on finding happiness outside of my career. I wasn’t actually “livin’ the dream” and I needed to ACTUALLY start to “live” my dream and focus on what brings me the most happiness in life…food and travel.
Now begins the journey as I search for and find this happiness and what a better way to do so than to search for it through an exploration of my passions. Will you follow me on my journey?
